The Light Returns

A third-floor flat in Capitol Hill, Seattle, at 2:17 am on an October morning. Rain pattered on the aged corrugated iron roofs of the Victorian timber houses; the water dripping from the gutters creaked like a quiet sobbing in the corridor. Inside, the pale blue glow from a hibernating laptop screen illuminated the face of Elena Marie Thompson. She sat huddled on a frayed leather sofa, a thin ash-grey woollen blanket covering her knees. the pungent smell of cold coffee wafted from a ceramic mug with a broken handle, still resting on the walnut coffee table. Her heavy breathing lightly flickered a small, waning candle on a dust-covered bookshelf.

Forty-eight years old. A freelance graphic designer who once worked for tech startups in South Lake Union. Alone in an 85-square-metre flat that had once been a family home. Seattle—the city of rain, the city of independent women, of baristas working double shifts, of young programmers running marathons on weekends, and of middle-aged women like Elena, divorced, sustaining themselves through precarious freelance contracts. Here, people often speak of “hustle culture”, but few admit that the hustle is sometimes just a way to escape oneself.

Five years ago, Mark signed the divorce papers right there on the oak kitchen table, then took two suitcases out the door without a lengthy explanation. Sophia, the eldest daughter, seventeen at the time, was preparing for NYU. Alex, the son, fifteen, was in his final year at Roosevelt High. The flat suddenly became a cavern. Elena switched off the lights, drew the thick curtains, and let the darkness swallow her whole. She was once the woman who ran marathons around Green Lake every Sunday morning, who cooked risotto for friends at rooftop parties overlooking the Space Needle, laughing so loudly the neighbours would knock to join in. Now, there was only a woman sitting in a dark room, smelling the mildew from unopened cardboard boxes, asking herself: “What do I have left?”

The decline began with very small, very quiet things, yet things common to thousands of middle-aged women in America after divorce or significant loss. Initially, it was staying up late to “meet deadlines” for startup clients in Bellevue. Then, skipping breakfast because she “wasn’t hungry”. Then, a bottle of red wine opened every evening to “relieve stress”—the kind of wine she used to only drink during tastings in Woodinville. She stopped practising yoga at the studio on Broadway, stopped walking along Lake Union, stopped calling Rachel—her best friend from university days at the University of Washington, who had since moved to Portland and had her own family. Her skin turned sallow, her hair fell out in clumps on her pillow every morning, and her waistline expanded by fifteen kilos until her old jeans could no longer be pulled up. Chronic insomnia. Anxiety. Unprovoked irritability with Mike—a freelance colleague she often collaborated with on web design. She tried sleep-tracking apps, free psychological counselling chatbots, and Facebook groups for “Divorced Women over 45 in Seattle”. None of them understood her. None of them asked: “How does your body feel today?” They only offered generic formulas, while she struggled with perimenopause hormones, the fear of abandonment, and the financial pressure of expensive private health insurance.

Old friends’ messages became sparse. “Elena is very busy,” she would reply. The truth was she no longer had the energy to play the role of a happy person. Divorce savings dwindled. Therapy at 180 dollars an hour in downtown Seattle—she couldn’t afford it long-term. Mrs Margaret, an eighty-two-year-old widowed neighbour, would occasionally knock with a plate of oatmeal biscuits, asking: “My dear, you look so pale.” Elena would only give a forced smile and say, “I’m fine, Margaret.”

Then, on a rainy night like tonight, she scrolled through Facebook, not knowing what she was looking for. An advertisement appeared: an image of a middle-aged woman sitting by a window, sunlight shining through a glass of herbal tea, with the words: “You are not alone in the journey of caring for yourself.” She clicked. That was the first time she heard of StrongBody AI.

She registered out of pure curiosity. The system asked what areas she was interested in. She chose “Women’s Health” and “Emotional Balance”. Ten minutes later, a notification appeared: “We have matched you with Dr Isabella Ruiz – Women’s Health Coach & Licensed Clinical Psychologist, San Francisco.”

Elena expected to meet a chatbot. But the following evening, she received her first voice message. A warm, slightly deep female voice with a gentle Spanish accent:

“Hello, Elena. I’m Isabella. I’ve read your profile. I know you are very tired. You can just listen to me speak today, no need to reply at all. Is that alright?”

Elena burst into tears on the spot. No one had called her by name and spoken to her with a real voice like that in a very long time.

They began their journey through StrongBody AI—not a scheduling app, not a chatbot, but a platform connecting real people with real people. Isabella wasn’t just a “coach”; she was a listener for everything: physical health, hormones, sleep, relationships, fears, even the memories of Mark that still haunted Elena whenever she lay alone in her overly large king-size bed. However, the platform had its practical limitations: sometimes the voice translation lagged slightly with Isabella’s Spanish accent, forcing Elena to listen twice; global servers occasionally slowed down during US-Pacific peak hours; the app didn’t yet support integrated video calls, so they had to switch to Zoom; and the 10% fee for buyers made Elena hesitate whenever paying for a long-term offer. But it was these very limitations that made Elena realise: she couldn’t rely entirely on technology. She had to do her own part of the work.

The first plan was very small, almost childish:

  1. Drink two litres of water every day (she set reminders on her phone, taking a photo of the glass to send to Isabella each time she finished).
  2. Warm camomile tea before bed (Isabella sent a recipe using herbs she bought at Pike Place Market).
  3. A ten-minute walk around the block after dinner, even if it rained (Elena wore her raincoat, carrying a thin blanket tucked in her bag because she feared the cold).

She took it further herself: she bought a leather-bound journal at a bookshop on Capitol Hill, writing every night about her emotions and menstrual cycle; she found free yoga classes at the Seattle Women’s Community Centre; she began cooking breakfast with oats, bananas, and chia seeds—things she previously considered a “bother”. Her own effort was the deciding factor. StrongBody AI and Isabella were merely the catalysts, the motivation reminding her when she felt like giving up.

There were days of relapse. Hormones fluctuated violently, and she lay on the floor crying, unable to stand up. She messaged Isabella at 1 am: “Isabella, I want to give up again today.”

Isabella replied immediately, her voice slightly raspy as it was late in California: “Elena, you don’t need to be strong right now. Let me hold you through the phone, shall we? Breathe in… breathe out… That’s it. Today, we just need to survive the night. Tomorrow, we will adjust the plan for this low-hormone phase. You are not wrong. You are simply in the middle of a storm.”

Rachel unexpectedly video-called from Portland: “Elena, I heard from Mike that you’re trying really hard. I’m proud of you. Do you need me to fly up to Seattle this weekend?” Elena cried: “Yes, Rachel. You’re the only one who has understood me since our student days.”

Mrs Margaret brought biscuits and sat to have tea with her: “I was just like you after my husband passed. But I learned that every day only requires one small step.”

Then, one March morning, Elena was sitting at her computer when she suddenly felt dizzy; her heart hammered, her hands shook, and she couldn’t breathe. A panic attack struck. This time, before opening StrongBody AI, she applied the breathing technique Isabella had taught her—placing her hand on her stomach and counting her breaths. Only then did she press the “Emergency Connect” button. Isabella video-called instantly:

“Elena, look at me. Hand on your stomach. In through the nose, out through the mouth… I’m here with you.”

But it was Elena’s initial effort at self-control that helped her recover more quickly.

Six months passed.

She woke up at 6:45 am, opened the curtains, and the Seattle spring sunlight shone onto the warm cup of camomile tea on the table. Her skin was brighter, her hair had thickened, and her old jeans now fit perfectly. She went for a light jog around Volunteer Park, her shirt soaked with sweat, but her heart beating strongly. She completed a branding project for a feminist café in Fremont—the largest project since her divorce. Mike messaged: “You’ve done a great job, Elena. You’re back.”

One Saturday afternoon, Sophia visited from New York. Alex flew in from Berkeley. They held a small picnic on the balcony: grilled chicken sandwiches, spinach salad, and two glasses of homemade kombucha tea. Elena told stories and laughed loudly. Sophia hugged her: “Mum, you look… alive again.” Alex whispered: “I’m so proud of you, Mum.”

Rachel flew up and sat drinking wine with her by the window: “You don’t need to be perfect, Elena. You just need to be here, still trying.”

Elena sent Isabella a long voice message: “Isabella, today I sat by the window, the sun was shining on my tea, and I realised: I’m no longer afraid of the darkness. Thank you for being by my side, not just as an expert, but as a sister. But I am also proud of myself—because I walked the path, I cooked for myself, I wrote the journal, I attended the yoga classes. StrongBody AI only opened the door. The person who walked through was me.”

Isabella replied: “Elena, I was only the torch. The real light comes from within you.”

Elena stood up, went to the window, and pushed open the glass pane. The faint scent of Seattle rain drifted in, but this time, it was no longer cold. She breathed deeply, feeling the breeze through her hair and across the skin she had finally learned to love.

She smiled.

Because she knew: in the darkest nights, when we dare to open our hearts and connect with those who truly listen, and—more importantly—act for ourselves, the light does not just shine; it radiates into other relationships: with children, with friends, with work, and with the surrounding community. Her journey was not over. Hormones would still fluctuate, deadlines would still arrive, and the Seattle rain would still fall. But now, she had the tools, she had a companion, and—most importantly—she had herself.

She was still moving forward. And that was the most beautiful thing of all.

They can send a custom request based on their actual needs via the “Send Request” form on a service detail page. The Seller will be notified of this bespoke request within their Seller management dashboard.

Sending a Public Request:

  • Crowdsourcing Experts: Buyers can issue a Public Request to multiple Sellers. If a Buyer cannot find a suitable existing service, they can create a Public Request by selecting a category and describing their requirements. The AI Smart Matching system then identifies potential Sellers based on expertise and sends them the request. The Buyer may then receive multiple offers from different Sellers, allowing them to choose the most suitable one.

Product Enquiries – Consult Request:

Products shared on a Seller’s personal shopfront are for informational and introductory purposes.

  • Direct Consulting: On the product information page, a Buyer can send a consultation request. StrongBody AI will open a B-Messenger window for direct, real-time communication.

5. Managing and Processing Offers

Dispute Resolution: In the event of a dispute, StrongBody AI will review the Offer details, chat history, images, and evidence provided by both parties to coordinate a resolution. If a refund or cancellation is agreed upon, the corresponding amount is returned to the Buyer.

Receiving Offers: When a Seller sends an offer for a product, service, or in response to a request, the Buyer can manage these via My Account -> Offers.

B-Messenger Integration: Offers are uniquely displayed within the B-Messenger chat window. This makes B-Messenger not just a communication tool, but a powerful integrated business transaction engine.

Reviewing Offers: Buyers can view full details of the offer, including the name, type of service/product, scope of work, timeline, delivery method, agreed terms, and the final cost. The Buyer has the option to accept or ignore the offer.

Payment and Escrow: Upon accepting an offer, the Buyer pays via PayPal or Stripe using their pre-configured card. Payment is entirely secure and held in escrow by StrongBody AI.

Fulfilment: The Seller is notified of the payment and proceeds with the work as outlined in the Offer.

Completion: Once the work is finished and the Buyer agrees with the result, they confirm the Offer as completed. The funds are then released to the Seller, minus the platform transaction fees.

Finalisation and Disputes: If the Buyer confirms receipt without complaint, the order is marked as complete. After 15 days, the funds are transferred to the Seller’s account. If a complaint arises, StrongBody AI provides mediation to help both parties resolve the issue.
Dispute Resolution: In the event of a dispute, StrongBody AI will review the Offer details, chat history, images, and evidence provided by both parties to coordinate a resolution. If a refund or cancellation is agreed upon, the corresponding amount is returned to the Buyer.
